Abstract

Obstetric emergencies require a rapid and organised healthcare response based on standardised protocols and nursing staff with up-to-date competencies. The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of an educational intervention based on obstetric emergency response keys in improving the knowledge of nursing staff in the gynaecology and obstetrics department of Dr Rafael Estévez Regional Hospital, Panama. A quantitative study with a quasi-experimental design was conducted to analyse changes in knowledge related to the identification and initial management of the main obstetric emergencies following an educational strategy. The findings revealed initial limitations in the recognition of obstetric emergency response keys and in some fundamental aspects of maternal care, with insufficient baseline knowledge among the participants. Following the intervention, a favourable improvement was identified in knowledge regarding postpartum haemorrhage, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and the initial response to obstetric complications. The educational intervention based on obstetric emergency response keys proved to be an effective strategy for strengthening nursing competencies and contributing to the improvement of maternal care.
